U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge Birds (Luke SmithwickUSFWS) The Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge sits atop the Arctic Circle and is approximately 1.6 million acres in size. The refuge is comprised of rich wetlands consisting of a network of lakes, streams, ponds, and marshes which provides nesting habitat for a number of bird species. A number of different landbird and waterbird surveys have been conducted. The following 137 species of birds have been documented on the refuge.
